Tamiya Mini 4WD

What it is

Mini 4WD is Tamiya's 1/32 scale racing format: no radio, no throttle. Cars run flat out on a lane track, and races are won on the bench, in how you build, gear, and tune your machine. At HUR it runs as its own structured program, distinct from our 1/28 disciplines, and it's where our STEM mission lives.

Who it’s for

Youth racers, families, and anyone who loves building as much as racing. No driving skill required on day one, your hands and your tuning decisions do the racing.

Getting started: about $40

  • Starter kit: Mach Frame FM-A chassis, 2 rechargeable AA batteries, and your first race fee, roughly $40 all in.
  • Per-event entry: $5 to $10 per car, covering the space, tools, and loaner batteries and chargers.
  • Session format: 3 hours total, 1 hour of build and tune, 2 hours of racing.
  • Race format: 9 racers, qualifiers into a losers bracket and finals, 3 to 6 laps per heat.
  • Weekly gatherings plus a monthly prize race.

STEM through play

Every race is a lesson

The Mini 4WD program is built to grow the hobby where it matters most: engaging Afro-Caribbean youth and building on the format’s deep roots in the Filipino community. Kids build, break, fix, and tune real machines, and learn real science doing it.

Science

Physics of motion: speed, friction, momentum, and why cars fly off the track when you get it wrong.

Technology

Motors, gears, bearings, and rollers: how each component changes the way a car runs.

Engineering

Build and modify your own machine. Every car on the grid is assembled and tuned by its racer.

Math

Gear ratios, lap counts, and tuning trade-offs: numbers you can feel on the track.
